If you ask me, it’s not a trade imbalance or a terrorist threat. If we’re talking about the problem that lies at the heart of everything, it’s got to be a severe, devastating lack of empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Social studies is many things, but at its core, it is the discipline of teaching students to see and to seek connections between themselves and others who are superficially very different – fostering critical and historical thinking, greater cultural awareness, and a sense of wonder about the world and our place in it.
Teaching your students empathy is maybe the most profound form of resistance to the problems of the world.
